KENNETH KONOPASEK and MARY

Born in Chicago, Illinois the same year as Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge, and relocated to California during WWII. Was graduated from Cal State Los Angeles in 1959 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Married in 1960 (Mary) and produced three children (Keith, Kristy and Kari). Became an electrical engineer and worked for several companies before joining The Aerospace Corporation. Retired in 1996 as an engineering director after thirty years of designing and directing satellite control centers and satellite tracking stations throughout the world.

During my years at Aerospace, as part of a company "Out-Reach" program, I did enjoy the lecturing of students in math and science classes on the care and feeding (command and control) of Air Force and National satellites. My lectures, filled with pictures of satellites and control facilities, always ended with extensive chats and graphs on the advantages of education and staying in school.

This activity, following my retirement, led me to a docent task at the Petersen Automotive Museum. I started introducing junior and high school students to physics (without using that threatening word) with automobile parts and exhibits. Like all docent jobs I have become involved in many other volunteer positions and tasks at the Petersen.

On July 8, 1995 tragedy struck our family. Our son Keith (32 years old, engaged to be married), a police officer for the city of Oakland, was killed with an assault rifle during a routine, drug arrest. Since that time, I have been active in several police support organizations, both in Northern and Southern California.

In retirement, my wife and I are staying "put" in our home in Palos Verdes and doing some traveling, both local and international. This last year we spent nearly a month in Italy and France. Earlier trips included England, Scotland, Germany, Scandinavia, Austria, and Holland. This July we are traveling to Eastern Europe and a cruise down the Danube (with Roland and Vonda Neundorf)

We currently have four grandchildren, ages 2, 3, 4, 5, all living near us in Torrance. We do a lot of babysitting!!!!!!!
