TOM CRAWFORD and CAROLINE

My Biography

Born in Covina. Moved to Burbank as a tot and lived at 234 N. Sparks St. for several years before moving to a 1 1/2 acre peach and plum orchard at 1000 Oak Street. Attended McKinley Grade School and Jordan Junior High before Burroughs.

Graduated from Stanford in 1959 (B.A. in philosophy/English) then was in the U.S. Navy for 2 years as a member of an admiral's staff, a stint that included an extensive 7- month tour of the Western Pacific. Graduated from George Washington Law School and passed the District of Columbia bar in 1964.

Married Caroline Cooley, a former La Canada Resident and Stanford class-mate in 1962. Our son Hardy was born in Washington D.C. in 1963, our daughter, Martha was born in Lima, Peru in 1965 and our youngest child, Caitlin, was born in San Francisco in 1979. Our family home has been on 7th Avenue in San Francisco since 1969.

I practiced law as a general practitioner and as a public attorney for years and also taught environmental law and land use planning law at California State University, San Jose. My first real professional work was as a foreign service officer in Washington, D.C., Peru and the Dominican Republic, 1965-68. In the years 1979-82, Caroline and I were the Co-directors of the Peace Corps program in the Eastern Caribbean, managing projects on 14 island states of the English-speaking Lesser Antilles.

In the 1990's I started Green Trees Press and published books, notably Prague by Caroline Crawford and Geniuses and Other Eccentrics: Photographing My Friends by Selden Rodman.

No grandchildren - yet, but soon, I am sure.
