STEVE BAUMAN and DELIA
STEVE BAUMAN FALL OF 2005 SHORT BIO

I graduated JBHS in January 1955, joined the USNavy in September, became an electronics technician and received an honorable discharge in 1958. I studied electronics at Glendale College 1959-60 and majored in English at Los Angeles Valley College 1961-62.

I started work as an electrical engineer for State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in 1963 and moved up to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1967, designing highway lighting and traffic signal systems, video traffic surveillance systems, and bridge and tunnel lighting systems. I retired in 2001 after 37 years at Caltrans.

I joined the Lamplighters (the prominent SF Bay Area company that performs Gilbert & Sullivan operettas) in 1968, singing 1st tenor in the chorus, along with some minor roles. I was also their archival audio recordist from 1969 through 1998 and last performed onstage in their 50th anniversary Gala in 2000. I began as a "supernumerary" (spear-carrier) onstage with San Francisco Opera in 1972 and for 33 consecutive seasons performed many roles such as monk, soldier, artist, waiter, peasant, revolutionary - occasionally getting much coveted individual bits - and am still an active super with SFOpera.

Hobbies have been both collecting recordings and electronic equipment and making them. Starting in 1948 I have collected Gilbert & Sullivan recordings on 78s, opera recordings and most opera and classical vocal recordings on 78s, 33s, 45s, tapes, and CDs. Specializing in audio and recording equipment is still a major (and expensive) hobby. I do live performance recordings of classical concerts and recitals.

I have two wonderful daughters from my former marriage and both are school teachers now. I began my newest role of grandfather on the 7th of August this year with the birth of my grandson Keith. I met my present wife Delia Voitoff in Lamplighters in 1971 where she was a leading contralto for four productions. (We were both happily married then to our previous spouses.) Ten years later we met again at the Opera House when she began as a fulltime chorister in 1981. We started dating during the Fall 1996 opera season when we were both single again and married in 1999. Happy as two birds of a feather ever since!
